Usability Test Script

Purpose:

Hi, ___________.

My name is Michael, and I’m going to be walking you through this website usability-test session today.

Before we begin, I’m going to review our goals briefly.  I am asking people to try performing the ten basic karate moves based on my Wiki-How article, which I am working to revise. I want to see how easy to understand and follow my Wiki-How article is. The session should take about fifteen minutes.

You should understand that this test is a performance test. It will require you to perform each step to the best of your ability in order to show how successful my article is in helping a person perform the ten basic Karate moves.

I want to make clear right away that I’m testing the article, not you. You can’t do anything wrong here.

As you use the article to perform all 10 moves, I’m going to ask you as much as possible to try to think out loud: to say what you’re looking at, what you’re trying to do, and what you’re thinking. This will be a big help to me.

Also, please don’t worry that you’re going to hurt my feelings. I’m doing this to improve this early version of the Wiki-How article, so I need to hear your honest reactions.

I (Michael) am the Facilitator, and Designer of the article. So, if you have any questions as we go along, just ask them.

I may not be able to answer them right away, since I’m interested in how people do when they don’t have someone sitting next to them to help. But if you still have any questions when we’re done I’ll try to answer them then.

With your permission, I’m going to record everything that happens during the test on paper. The recording will only be used to help me figure out how to improve the article, and it won’t be seen by anyone except the people involved with this project.

User Background Questions:

Before we begin the test, I would like to ask you a few questions:

1. Have you ever used the Wiki-How website before?

2. Have you ever tried any type of Karate, or been interested in trying it?

3. If you have, for how long have/were you in Karate for?

Initial Navigation:

OK, great. We’re done with the initial questions, and we can start looking at things.

First, I’m going to ask you to look at the article and tell me what you make of it: what strikes you about it, whose site do you think it is, and what is it meant for. Does it look appealing to you? If you saw this article would you want to use it? Now scroll through and observe what you see out loud.

Specific Tasks:

Thanks. Now I’m going to ask you to try to complete all of the steps in the Wiki-How article.

And again, as much as possible, it will help me if you can try to think out loud as you go along through the following list of tasks.

Complete all of the steps in the Wiki-How article.

List off any steps that didn’t make any sense, or were hard to understand. Also describe any other problems you faced.

Follow up Questions:

This Article was easy to understand:

1 – Strongly Agree     2-  Agree      3- Neutral        4-  Disagree       5- Strongly Disagree

I am confident that I can successfully perform all steps with no extra help:

1 – Strongly Agree     2-  Agree      3- Neutral        4-  Disagree       5- Strongly Disagree

This Article made me more interested in Karate:

1 – Strongly Agree     2-  Agree      3- Neutral        4-  Disagree       5- Strongly Disagree

I faced very few if any problems during this test:

1 – Strongly Agree     2-  Agree      3- Neutral        4-  Disagree       5- Strongly Disagree

After having explored the article, is there anything that strikes you that you want to see changed?

Can you suggest any additions or subtractions of to the article’s content?

Can you suggest any changes to the structure, or design of the article?

Do you have any questions for me, now that we’re done?

Ending the Test:

Thank you for participating in this usability test. Do you have any additional comments, or questions?
